No one learns by not doing, even if it's scary. Free to roam, within boundaries... ... However, I won't let them maim themselves or anyone else, dive head first off the back of the couch, run in traffic, eat the houseplants or lick the railings at mall... no matter how fun they think that might be. - I believe in discipline and boundaries within reason and every kid is different in what that looks like. Some need a chat and a hug. Some need strict boundaries and measurable consequences (like "time-out"). - I believe in fair, but firm. - I believe in making them clean up their own messes. You take it out, then you put it away. They can also help with age appropriate chores or tasks (helping with dishes/dishwasher, putting away clothes, loading the dryer, picking up toys, feed the dog etc)... - I believe in nurturing but still with a firm, no-nonsense approach. I'm loving and caring and fun, but not a push-over or easily manipulated by tantrums or whining and kids quickly learn that behaviour doesn't work with me. - I have TONNES of "nieces & nephews" because all "my babies" are just that; my babies... for always (my first "baby" is now 25yo). I will love and treat them as if they were mine, protect and defend them as if they were my own. - I will answer any of their questions honestly, truthfully and as best I can in terms they'll understand, even if it is awkward.
