Well-educated woman recently retired from the BC Provincial Government, with many years' experience working wihth vulnerable populations.
I was born in the Philippines. I met my husband, who is Canadian, when we were both working as teachers at a resettlemernt camp for Indo Chinese refugees in the Philippines (in the 1980s.) We both lived and worked in Africa (2 years), Pakistan (6 years) and in Turkey (14 years), before returning to Canada in 2007 - my husband with refugee programs while I taught English at the university level.
When we returned to Canada in 2007 one of my first jobs was with Elder Safe. I left Eldersafe when it was absorbed by another agency and also because I started work with the government. I then worked for the provincial government as a write and correspondence and policy analyst (2008-2019). From 2008 to 2017 I also worked part-time as a client services worker and shelter support worker for the homeless. In 2019 I retired from government and since then I have been working at group homes for adults with developmental disabilities (e.g. autism and Down's syndrome).
I speak five languages. I have developed special skills and competencies gained from living in different countries and cultures, including patience, flexibility, empathy and effective communication. I grew up in the Philippines where young people are taught to value, respect and care for the elderly, and develop strong interpersonal skills. I have also had formal training in crisis management, managing difficult behaviors, medicine administratiin, cultural sensitivity, through school and on the job training. I love to read and will be happy to work with seniors interested in books and music. I am also a very good cook.
Experience: Companionship, support and personal care for seniors - one year. Care for adults with dementia and with developmental disabilities - 3.5 years. Care for vulnerable populations - over 10 years.
