Keya P.
My name is Keya. I am 18 years old and am currently living at UBC. I am taking a gap year before beginning medical school in 2026. With two years of experience working with children one-on-one and in larger group settings, I bring responsibility, patience and knowledge to my lessons. I am passionate about science and math-related subjects. My goal is to help students determine what studying methods work best for them. This means adapting my lessons to meet each student's individual learning needs. I integrate acronyms and stories into lessons for understanding and engagement. Further, I aim to foster an enjoyable and welcoming enviornment for students. I am confident in my abilities to support students in reaching their full potential. For the past few years, I have taught STEM-related topics to students at a local elementary school. Conversing with students and supporting them enables me to make a meaningful impact on their academic pursuits. I aim to positively impact the educational journeys of the students I teach!
For the past two years, I have had experience planning and delivering weekly STEM-related lessons for students aged 7 to 12 as an After School Program Teacher at a local elementary school. Throughout my time in this position, I have strengthened my ability to explain complex concepts in a way that is clear, engaging, and tailored to the students' individual needs; therefore, I am confident in my ability to support a range of students. Teaching 20 students has allowed me to practice my public speaking and explain complex concepts effectively and engagingly. One of the things I’m most proud of is my ability to adapt the way I present information to suit different age groups and individual learning needs. For example, when teaching a 7-year-old versus a 12-year-old, I may use different language or use stories or analogies to aid in simplifying the material. This role has also strengthened my collaboration skills. I work alongside a team to create lesson plans and interactive activities. We divide responsibilities such as organizing and gathering supplies, managing funding, building presentations, and leading lessons and activities. Working in this team-based environment has allowed me to appreciate the value of active listening, flexibility, and clear communication
