Alexandra Kay R.
I'm Alex, a Filipino-Canadian Electrical Engineering student at the University of Toronto, currently completing my degree with a PEY co-op and a minor in Robotics & Mechatronics. I love anything related to circuits, robotics, coding, and (a bit surprisingly) biology, so I'm always excited to share that curiosity with students. Outside of academics, I'm a Programs Team Leader with UofT's Engineering Outreach Office, where I've helped run STEM programs for over 1, 100 elementary and high school students and supervised teams of up to 36 instructors. Before that, I worked directly with students as a facilitator, designing hands-on lessons for classes of up to 24 and adapting my teaching style to different learning needs. I'm also an Orientation Leader, mentoring incoming first-year engineering students through their transition to university life. When I'm not studying or teaching, you'll usually find me singing, crocheting, or tinkering with electronics projects for fun. I'm patient, easygoing, and genuinely enjoy helping people understand things that once felt confusing to me too. I believe learning should feel encouraging rather than stressful, and I try to bring that energy into every session, whether we're working through a tricky math problem or debugging a piece of code together.
I've spent the past two years teaching and mentoring students through the University of Toronto Engineering Outreach Office. As an Electrical-Computer Engineering Program Facilitator, I designed and delivered interactive STEM lessons for classes of up to 24 high school students, adapting my teaching style to different learning needs and keeping students engaged through hands-on activities. I focused on building students' confidence and critical thinking skills, while making sure every student felt comfortable asking questions and participating. I was later promoted to Programs Team Leader, where I helped coordinate three STEM outreach programs (DEEP Summer Academy, CREATE: Global Engineering Challenge, and Jr. DEEP), reaching over 1, 100 elementary and high school students. In this role I supervised and trained a team of up to 36 instructors and facilitators, which gave me a strong understanding of effective teaching methods and how to support other educators in delivering engaging lessons. I'm currently a third-year Electrical Engineering student at the University of Toronto, so I'm comfortable teaching math and physics at the high school level, as well as introductory programming (Python, C/C++) and engineering concepts. I'm patient, organized, and good at breaking down technical material into something approachable, whether I'm working one-on-one or with a group.
I just completed my third year of Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto, and I am also pursuing a minor in Robotics and Mechatronics.
