I am first and foremost an artist in the dance discipline, as well as an illustrator, and I am looking for meaningful part-time work to compliment my artistic practice. Over the last six years, I cared for my own ailing grandparents in their home, who suffered from Parkinson, dementia, digestive issues, hearing impairment, and a heart condition. I have also worked with children both as a babysitter (infancy to adolescence) and as a dance teacher and choreographer, and am frequently interacting with residents in CHSLD as an artist. My spoken and written languages are English and French, and I am currently excited to be learning Spanish. I would love opportunities to practice conversation! I love to cook, to write, to read, to listen to people, and to offer people comfort when they are feeling down or unwell. I am excellent at coordinating activities and schedules, and I love helping people organize their belongings, thoughts, tasks, etc. Over the past decade I have created multi-media dance performances, managing mid-sized teams and budgets, and coordinating complex schedules and transport of materials, and tours. Prior to this, I worked for seven years as a dancer, touring the world. Manual labour is something I enjoy, and my understanding of the body and of anatomy through my years of dance training as an important asset. I have worked for a dance company called Le Radeau and their project entitled Mouvement de passage since 2017. This project brings dance and music into CHSLDs and is geared especially towards residents diagnosed with neuro-cognitive disabilities such as Alzheimer's. We work one-on-one with residents, creating spontaneous dances and songs using the present moment -- whatever is their current mood, their preoccupations, objects or sources of inspiration in their rooms. The interactions can be incredibly lively to incredibly subtle and delicate. They can last seconds or extend as long as an hour and a half! It all depends on the individuals we encounter. I'm am continuously humbled and energized by what the residents give back to us, each time we visit. In terms of direct care-taking and house-keeping, I have never worked for pay. I have however spent at least the past six years caring for my grandparents in their home as they became less independent before they died. My grandfather had Parkinson's and extremely reduced mobility towards the end of his life. My grandmother became very frail but needed lively companionship and stimulating activities until the very end. I truly loved being with them through the stages of their end-of-life and found this kind of care work and the strengthening of our connections extremely gratifying and rewarding. Through Le Radeau and Mouvement de passage I received several trainings concerning neurocognitive conditions awareness, how best to approach and interact with individuals experiencing these conditions, and more global realities experienced by their close loved ones and caretakers, concerning deuil blanc, etc. I have had a little bit of education in assisting people with visual impairments, but I would need to refresh my understanding. I regularly keep my basic first-aid training up to date.
