I have worked for seven (7) years as a member of the healthcare support team, specifically as the cook, in an ASSISTED SENIOR RETIREMENT FACILITY that provides accommodation, personal care, recreation, wellness programs and food services. It was a demanding and challenging role as I worked as a ‘ONE-MAN’ team in the kitchen, a solo multi-tasker. The facility is home to RETIRED FRENCH NUNS with the goal of providing utmost care in all aspects of their well-being as seniors. Just like in any other facility, the residents’ needs differ in profile. Most of them have health issues, nutritional requirements, food sensitivities/allergies, and personal food preferences that must be professionally addressed and complied with for the betterment of their health, safety, and overall comfort and well-being. There were times I was in -charge of looking after those nuns who preferred not to go out or join certain outings due to their incapacity to do so on their own (i.e., with IMPAIRED VISION, CANCER, LUPUS, DEMENTIA, ALZHEIMER’S, DIABETES, WHEELCHAIR-BOUND, etc .).
Supervision of nuns assigned to do light work in the kitchen was also part of my job. Their tasks involved drying some dishes and putting them away, slicing fruits and veggies, etc. as forms of mental and physical exercise to keep them active, especially those with DEMENTIA and ALZHEIMER'S. It was a challenging task for me to supervise them as it entailed a lot of patience, compassion and understanding of their realm. But, it’s a nice, rewarding experience too, a self-fulfilling accomplishment, being able to help them thrive and enjoy life to the fullest despite their circumstances.
Moreover, I have ample experience as a personal caregiver of my own mom before I migrated to Canada, a duty I still devotedly perform every time I visit her in the Philippines. She is blessed to be 95 years old now and still enjoying life, despite showing some signs of cognitive decline (DEMENTIA) inherent to her old age. During my last visit in OCT - DEC 2023, I served as my mom’s main personal caregiver, providing all aspects of FULL CARE (i.e., toileting, diapering, bathing, brushing teeth, dressing up, taking care of hygiene and skin care, cooking, feeding, massaging, assisting in walking and other exercises, providing emotional support, administering medications, escorting to appointments, etc.). I was the one who trained and hired my mom’s caregiver who is now under the direct supervision of my sister there.
As added complement, I am adept at housekeeping. We used to own a cleaning company franchise for fifteen (15) years, where I was the one in- charge of quality control and management stuff.
