Jessica M.
Jessica, a compassionate care provider for people and pets from Edmonton, has over five years of experience in healthcare, specializing in mental health, home care, dementia care, and care for people with developmental disabilities. These roles have developed her skills in patience, understanding body language, identifying behavioral issues, and managing triggers, extremely useful for her recent work as a self-employed dog walker. She expertly manages dogs' reactive behaviors using a calm approach that associates other dogs with a reward rather than fear. When encountering another dog, she maintains distance, redirects the dog's attention with a treat and praises for non-reactive behavior. She knows the importance of distinguishing between small and large breed dogs. She recommends using a loose lead approach and a secure harness for large breeds for better control. For small breeds, she is mindful of their delicate tracheas and avoids pulling, to prevent reactive leash behavior.
I have owned many animals from birds, dogs, cats for many years and spent a good 3 year period where I was paid for looking after animals. I love looking after and caring for animals of all kinds, literally kind of my dream job. My experience has been house sitting, dog walking, administration of medications if needed for dogs, cats and birds. I'm pretty comfortable with all sizes of dogs too, from Daschaund to Great Danes. I'm comfortable with strong dogs that can be pullers, and I have experience with reactive behaviors with triggers like other dogs when on walks. I've gotten compliments from many pet owners, I like to keep pet owners up to date with stories of their pets day, pictures and videos, and let them know of any health concerns. Cats I am comfortable with, I have a female orange cat at home that turned from a terror to a snuggler. Birds I have owned ranged from small like a budgie, to cockatiel and larger parrots. I have also worked in health care for over 5 years currently, and I am looking to expand my horizons for a field of work that includes caring for animals. I have a long work experience reading body language and working with difficult behaviors in health care, as a toddler mom and currently self contract work doing dog walks to Edmonton area. I have my own vehicle for commuting, and am able to travel reliably.
