Ideally, we're looking for a live-in helper for our mom who is 86 and lives with our sister in East Vancouver. Fraser Street/ SW Marine Drive approximate area). Our sister takes care of her full time, but is needing help!
We have a furnished downstairs with a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and small living room area that the live in person can rent. Utilities, heat, internet cost is included in the rent.
This is a full time job. Day shift hours are approximately 11AM to 8PM; Monday to Friday. Occasional overnight shift hours are approximately 12AM to 6AM to take her to the bathroom if she wakes up during the night and bring her back to bed so some flexibility will be required on your part. We anticipate requiring mostly day shifts but some night time hours may be needed.
We are looking for a caregiver who is reliable, trustworthy, extremely patient and gentle with very elderly frail seniors and physically strong to provide caregiving to our elderly mom in her home and also provide mental and social stimulation as she has not been able to go out much due to her mobility problems and the pandemic.
Although having your own car and a good driving record, isn't a requirement, it would be helpful as my sister doesn't drive, the person could help take my mom to occasional doctor's visits.
Duties include:
- When you're on possible night shift: holding and walking or pushing her while she is sitting on her walker so she doesn't fall when she gets up in the middle of the night wanting to go to the bathroom.
Day shift - responsibilities:
- Personal care (spoon-feeding, toileting, oral care, bathing, dressing, walking with her with her as she uses her walker around the house to ensure she doesn’t fall )
- Coach and practice simple mobility and strengthening exercises with her several times a day (we will train you)
- Talk to her to practice her speaking skills (she had a stroke two years ago which affected her mouth/vocal abilities – hence she has some swallowing difficulties and much difficulty speaking clearly)
-Some housekeeping (vacuuming, cleaning bathroom, kitchen, tidying up, etc.)
-Occasionally making or prepping some meals
- Ensure client safety and comfort at all times
- Other tasks
Hours and days:
- Night shift or Day shifts. some flexibility will be required on your part.
Requirements:
- Previous experience taking care of elderly clients with limited mobility, possibly experience with stroke patients.
- Punctual, caring, patient, physically strong
- Honest, reliable, with excellent client references.
- Good verbal English skills
- valid Canadian work authorization.
Hourly rate: $23-$25/hour for daytime hours $20 for night time sleep monitoring hours.
