I am seeking an experienced and compassionate support person to provide assistance and companionship to my mother, an 81-year-old senior individual with moderate dementia. My mother is not facing any physical health or mobility challenges, and she has a very sociable personality. However, the progression of her dementia is becoming more prominent. Ideally, I am hoping to find someone with substantial experience dealing with Alzheimer's/Dementia. For the last six months, my mother has resided in a memory care facility in Midland, her former home, but there are no family members in close proximity. As such, I plan to relocate her to a retirement home in Cambridge where I live, which will allow me to stay close and better participate in her care. This particular facility does provide dementia support services, but my mother requires extra help in certain areas such as organizing activities, maintaining her small unit, and doing laundry and orienting to tasks, reminders and redirection. My mother needs assistance in accomplishing these tasks, not through someone doing them for her, but through someone's companionship and support who encourages her autonomy. She would greatly benefit from a helpful companion who can guide her in daily tasks such as determining when and how to do her laundry. An ideal companion would also be someone willing to accompany her on walks or trips to local shops or cafes. The position is estimated to be around 8 to 10 hours a week initially, but we're open to assessing if her needs require more hours. The hours can be flexible according to your schedule, and we can mutually determine what times of the day would be most beneficial for her. The right person for this role should be locally based, flexible enough to accommodate this schedule into their lifestyle, and be willing to engage in continuous communication with me. As for the salary, I am willing to pay up to $35 per hour depending on experience. A valid driver's license is required for this role as it may involve driving my mother for outings or appointments. Among the primary responsibilities are: Escorting to appointments, laundry, planning visits or trips, and providing Alzheimer/Dementia care. It is pertinent that you are comfortable working with individuals suffering from Alzheimer's or Dementia. This is a part-time, live-out role. I am hoping to commence services around the 30th of September, 2024 if the unit is ready for her to move into. This role would ideally suit someone who is caring, patient, and looking to forge a long-term relationship with my mother. On November 7, 2022 my father, who fought to the very end, died from brain cancer. He was my mom's primary caregiver and support. Now that he has passed, I have taken over my mom's care. My mom, who has early onset dementia, is an able-bodied person who can do everything for herself - with some prompting. Our main concern is that she requires gentle supervision - someone to keep an eye on her and ensure that she is eating, taking her medication, and watching out for her general well being and safety. While my mom is social and loves to make people laugh, she also does not like to be doted on 24/7. She appreciates her alone time and really does not appreciate being told what to do, but rather encouraged to do things. She is very lonely after losing my dad. We recently moved her to a retirement home in Cambridge in March and are looking for some additional support for her. She spends most of her days alone in her room, which has had a major toll on her mental health and memory. The ideal person for this will be someone who has an understanding of dementia and what to look out for. The ideal person will also be someone with good communication skills, patience, and a good sense of humor. My mom mainly needs someone to check in in her, hang out and watch a show, go outside, encourage her to eat, and feed the cat. If this is of interest, please connect with me and we can chat more.
