Cynthia C.
I am a 21-year-old student who just completed my Bachelor of Science with a specialization in Kinesiology at Queen’s University. My background in dance and my interest in science led me to pursue this degree, and it was an incredible decision. In my time at Queen’s, I have had the opportunity to explore many extracurricular activities, from learning student politics as the president of the Kinesiology faculty society to exploring exercise considerations for persons experiencing disability while completing my Disability and Physical Activity Certificate. Moreover, I have been exposed to a community of hard-working, welcoming, and dedicated students throughout the entire university, solidifying friendships with classmates and roommates that will last a lifetime. Some of my fondest memories were Sunday Night Dinners with my roommates, getting picked up for exams with my two best friends in Kinesiology, and trying the wide variety of restaurants in Kingston. Friendships and family are high priorities in my life. Having a support system and being a support to others is something I am incredibly grateful for. Some of my recent hobbies have included reading, designing cards, exercising by going to the gym, teaching fitness classes, and attending classes, such as a recent favourite: kickboxing. I love taking every opportunity to learn from it and to challenge myself by taking on new roles I haven't previously experienced. Working with children supports these values by helping me practice patience, creativity, and communication. I look forward to where new opportunities take me.
Began by watching and entertaining a 7-year-old while his mom was still home. This allowed her to complete household tasks while ensuring fun and safe play for her child. Some of our fondest times involved scootering around their neighbourhood and sledding during the wintertime. I expanded my babysitting throughout my neighbourhood, working with children ranging in age from 2 to 13. I worked with one family for three consecutive years throughout the pandemic. This role involved picking up the children from school, bringing them home, preparing meals, and creating non-screen-based activities. Some of our fondest moments were completing online school together, learning new dance moves, and taking the children for a scooter or bike ride. Paired with this have been personal dance lessons and fitness classes for a nearby family. For the past 6 years, I have also taken care of and house-sat for two neighbours, with responsibilities including snow shovelling, cat sitting, and taking out the garbage. Moreover, in my recent university years, I have completed the athletic therapy mini-stream program at Queen’s University, where I supported the care and prevention of athletic injuries. While this is not exactly the same as childcare, the emergency skills and preventive actions learned and practiced have made me better equipped to care for children.
