My name is Varsha, I am 25 years old, I am in law school at the University of Exeter in England. I first completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto in Public Policy and Criminology with a minor in Economics. I have a plethora of experiences working with children in an educational and recreational manner. I did some summertime babysitting during University, but after graduating, I took on a role as an Au Pair in Paris. I took care of the after school activities of two children ages 7 and 10, which included snack, homework, after school extracurriculars, dinner, and bedtime. As a primary motive of moving to Paris was to learn French, I was able to become an advanced speaker and writer through my time there. Fortunately one of my house mates now is French and it has allowed me to maintain my French speaking skills. I have always had a distinct passion for education and started tutoring children in English and Math since I was 16, which I continued to do so in University as well. Upon returning from Paris, I worked at the education centre Oxford Learning for 2 years as an Education Coordinator which allowed me to continue in this passion. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience to work with families and children that had been sidelined by the education system, and just needed some extra support. Recreationally, I was a volleyball, basketball, and figure skating coach in high school. Outside of my educational interests in legal and intellectual spaces, I love all music, and am quite an advanced piano player, completing RCM level 8! I am quite a can-do person and love picking up random skills. I enjoy picking up art projects like sewing my own clothes, or painting my old furniture. I am also a lover of watching sports games, especially hockey and football (both kinds)! Whilst studying at University of Toronto I actually went to every game of the 2021/2022 Toronto Football Club season! I am also a big English literature fan, although Harry Potter will secretly always be my favourite! I love to travel and am a massive history nerd, although I have exhausted my family with museums :) I hope to help your family as best as I can!

Education Coordinator

As the Education Coordinator for centres in Toronto and Vancouver, I was responsible for providing external educational support to students who were struggling in the tradition school system. These families trusted myself and the staff to really identify where their children were particularly struggling and work on building their learning skills, which could eventually strengthen their learning abilities. I was responsible for running the centres and ensuring that customer enquiries were dealt with, but more importantly ensuring that all the children's sessions were productive and were reflective of their educational growth. Initially I would assess their cognitive and academic skills, and build a specific program for each child based on the outcomes of the assessment. I would personally then ensure that tutors understood each child's needs and how we could approach each learning challenge. This position really refined my ability to remain calm and innovative when a proposed approach was not successful in helping the student, and helped me learn how to pivot on a whim.

As an Au Pair, I was living with a family in Paris in a sort of cultural exchange. I spent time taking care of two children (age 7 and 10) ensuring their safety, the completion of school work and attendance to after school activities as well as teaching them English. my responsibilities also included cooking, cleaning, and ensuring the general tidiness of the house. In turn, they welcomed me into their family, taught me many interesting French traditions and and helped me greatly improve my French language skills. The family I worked with in France were very busy and depended on me to help them organize the kids and ensure that everything was in control, including after school activities, school projects, play dates, and day off activities. Of course I communicated everything with them and ensured they were comfortable with the decisions I made, but they also depended and felt comfortable with me using my best judgement with the kids. I had quite a bit of practice dealing with sibling disputes and general kid outbursts and have navigated them in a calm yet decisive manner.
