Tammy A.
I am a mom of 3 kids, one of which is on the spectrum. I have worked in the health care and caregiver field professionally since I was 18 years old, however I first began assisting with cargiving at the age of 13 with my mom when she had undergone surgery on her knee and had a stroke post-op which required her to have a significant amount of assistance in her daily life at home while she underwent rehab. That was the start of a long battle for my mom watching her go in and out of hospitals and then eventually end up in LTC when I was 17. Watching the lack of care and compassion my mom would get from some caregivers is what made me decide to go into the field of cargiving. I began my career doing the PSW program and working in LTC, retirement and homecare. After that I was very fortunate to get hired on at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Center where I worked for 10 years in all areas of the hospital. The experience i gained working in the Mental health field pushed me in a different direction from senior care to finding love and enjoyment in working with individuals with intellectual and behavioral diagnosis. I eventually moved on from the Royal and began working in group homes for individuals with dual diagnosis as well as providing respite care privately to children and adults with behavioral challenges, intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities as well as providing private care for seniors in their homes. Needless to say I'm a woman of many talents who has a strong passion for working with and helping people, and look forward to finding new clients to help in the future :)
I have both personal experience from being a mom but also professional experience working with children who have a range of intellectual and physical disabilities as well as behavioral challenges.
