Ashleigh D.
I’m Ashleigh, an 18-year-old psychology student at the University of Waterloo in Lisgar Mississauga. For the past eleven years, I’ve advocated for youth well-being, served as an ambassador for Canada’s largest children’s non-profit, and co-founded a youth-led group focused on social impact. My passion for supporting kids comes from my volunteer work and personal experiences. I grew up in a big family and often cared for my younger sister, cousins at our cottage, and family friends which taught me patience and empathy. I also attended We Take Action Camp, focusing on youth leadership and fostering inclusive environments for children. Both my parents are educators—one a kindergarten teacher specializing in exceptionalities, and the other a school principal. Growing up in this environment, I gained insights into child development and education. I also have experience caring for children with special needs and a solid understanding of how to support their growth and happiness through my psychology studies. I’m a very well-rounded person who believes young people should be very academically focused, and also strive to shape other aspects of their lives to ensure personal success, health and happiness. My hobbies include playing instruments, public speaking, working out, crafting, writing (books and poems), knitting and crocheting, event planning, and cooking to name a few. I’m energetic, empathetic, and responsible. I can help with homework, walk kids to school, plan fun outings, and provide safe care. I’m flexible with scheduling and dedicated to creating a positive environment for children.
While I have not specifically been paid for the babysitting work I’ve done in the past, I have been performing the same duties as an older sister, older cousin and for family friends for years. I have experience taking care of kids between 2-17 years old, and children with exceptionalities. I also co-founded my own youth-led activism group seven years ago and have lots of training in facilitating events for children. Additionally, I study psychology and have been a part of many volunteer youth mental-health councils and panels and have co-authored a book providing resources to encourage holistic well-being for young people. I've taken on leadership positions in camp settings and retreats and even received an award from my university for my community building and facilitating skills. Furthermore, for years now I have helped my little sister, peers and younger students with homework and academics, and have eight grade level subject awards that demonstrate my ability to provide assistance on an academic level. Through personal experience, advocacy and my studies I have a wealth of knowledge about how to take care of and promote optimal success and well-being for children at their specific developmental stages.
