Here in Canada, I currently work as a developmental support worker with children and youth who have mental health issues or disorders such as developmental delay, ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), intellectual disabilities, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and FASD (Fatal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder). My job duties include, but are not limited to, behavioral observation, accompanying them to school, taking them to appointments such as hospital visits and trips to the park. Additionally, for the youth, I assist with the transition into adulthood by teaching basic home chores like baking, cooking, and general housekeeping. I also help them with laundry tasks. I am responsible for giving them their medication, following the rules such as not giving medicine in their bedroom. I ensure they take their medicine by engaging them in conversation. I also handle documentation tasks such as filling out one-to-one sheets, medication sheets, daily logs, and communication books. I also work with individuals who have dual diagnoses such as mental health issues and substance abuse, including schizophrenia and substance abuse (such as cigarette smoking or gambling).
