Samantha N.
My name is Sam, and I’m a first-year medical student at the University of Alberta. I grew up in Whitehorse, Yukon, and moved to Calgary in 2019 to pursue my Psychology degree. I graduated in 2022 from Mount Royal University before moving back to the Yukon. Prior to starting med school, I worked as a respite caregiver for children with disabilities and as a caregiver for family and social services. I’ve also been a caregiver for many families in my hometown, looking after children ranging from 2 months to 13 years old. Throughout the years, I’ve made some incredible connections with families and have always felt that spending time with children grounds me in the innocence and excitement of life. Aside from school and volunteering, I’m really excited to start my garden this summer! I’ll be growing carrots, potatoes, strawberries, jalapeños, broccoli, and much more. I also love spending time with my dog, Nahanni.
I have a diverse background in childcare, having worked in both formal and informal caregiving roles. Growing up in Whitehorse, Yukon, I had the opportunity to provide care for children in my community, ranging from 2 months to 13 years old. My responsibilities included feeding, bathing, playing, creating engaging activities to foster their learning, and providing general household support. I also helped with cooking meals and doing house chores and any other tasks that could support the family's day to day life. In addition to this informal caregiving, I worked as a respite caregiver for children with disabilities, where I provided specialized care to children who needed extra attention, support, and understanding. I also worked as a caregiver in family and social services, where I got the privilege of meeting little gal who had a huge impact on me. These experiences helped me become more adaptable, patient, and understanding of each child’s unique needs. Spending time with children has always grounded me in the innocence and excitement of life, and I find joy in building connections with the families I work with. These experiences have shaped my approach to caregiving, and I bring the skills of empathy, communication, and problem-solving to every new kiddos i meet:)
