Working with children has been a big part of my life for many years. I am currently a second-year Early Learning and Child Care student going into my third year at Mount Royal University, and I bring both formal training and real-life family experience into my caregiving.
I grew up in a household where taking care of others is one of the main ways we show love and respect. In my family and culture back in the Philippines, caring for people is very important, and that has strongly shaped who I am. It taught me to be nurturing, patient, and attentive to the needs of others from a young age.
At times growing up, I personally experienced what it feels like to be left out, and that made me even more aware of how important it is for children to feel safe, included, and valued. When I care for my younger cousins, I protect and support them as if they were my own, and I make sure they never feel left out or alone. This has made me very sensitive to children’s emotions and helped me create a caring and inclusive environment.
In my practicum and volunteer roles, I have supported children through everyday routines such as helping with bathroom needs, preparing snacks and lunches, and making sure children feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. I focus on creating a fun and playful environment where children can learn naturally through activities they enjoy.
I love planning activities that match children’s interests, whether that is arts and crafts, music, reading, or simple games. I believe play is one of the best ways for children to learn, and I try to make every day engaging and positive.
Caring for my younger cousins since I was 12 years old has also shaped who I am as a caregiver. Taking responsibility during family trips and sleepovers helped me become dependable, patient, and confident in looking after children of different ages.
Outside of childcare, I enjoy reading, hiking, and camping, which helps me stay active and brings new ideas into the activities I plan for children. Some of my key strengths are being reliable, kind, patient, and attentive. I am always looking to grow, and I am especially interested in learning more about child behavior, child development, and new play-based strategies to better support children.
